ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Neck pain is a major public health problem. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of neck pain among high school students and to analyze associations with sociodemographic variables, use of electronic devices, habitual physical activity practices and mental health problems. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional epidemiological study on a sample of high school students in the city of Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil. METHOD: Participants were selected through cluster sampling in two stages and data were collected via face-to-face interviews. Data collection comprised the following steps: 1. sociodemographic characteristics; 2. use of electronic devices; 3. habitual physical activity levels; 3. mental health; and 4. neck pain. RESULTS: A total of 1,628 participants were interviewed. The prevalence of neck pain was 49.1% (95% confidence interval, CI 46.7 to 51.5), with 40.4% (95% CI 37.0 to 43.7) in men and 57.5% (95% CI 54.2 to 60.9) in women. The variables associated with in neck pain were: female (prevalence ratio, PR = 2.04), use of cell phone in standing posture (PR = 1.47), use of tablet in sitting posture (PR = 1.72), length of computer use greater than 3 hours/day (PR = 1.54), length of cell phone use greater than 3 hours/day (PR = 1.54), length of tablet use greater than 3 hours/ day (PR = 1.34) and mental health problems (PR = 1.56). CONCLUSION: There is high prevalence of neck pain among students and striking associations with female sex, use of electronic devices and mental health problems.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain is frequent among schoolchildren and the variables related to high intensity and high back frequency are important predictors for the increase of such complaints in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To determine the high intensity and high frequency of low back pain and its associated factors in high school students. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 760 students (319 boys and 441 girls) who reported low back pain. Demographic, socioeconomic, electronic devices, habitual physical activity practice, mental health, and high frequency and high intensity low back pain data were collected. Descriptive analyzes and bivariate and multivariate logistic regressions were used. RESULTS: Of the total number of subjects with low back pain, 14.6% reported high frequency of pain, being 36.9% boys and 63.1% girls, while 42.6% reported high intensity, being 35.8% boys and 47.2% girls. The variables associated with the high frequency of low back pain were altered mental health, posture lying on the use of tablet, time of daily use of the cell phone and distance of the screen to the eyes of the computer user, while the female sex, mental health problem, posture lying on the use of cell phone and the distance of the screen to the eyes of the computer user with severe intensity of low back pain. CONCLUSION: The demographic factors and related to the use of electronic devices were associated with high intensity and high frequency of low back pain.


INTRODUÇÃO: As dores lombares são frequentes entre as escolares e as variáveis relacionadas a alta intensidade e alta frequência de lombar são importantes preditores para o aumento de tais queixas na idade adulta. OBJETIVO: Determinar a alta intensidade e alta frequência de lombar e os seus fatores associados em estudantes do ensino médio. MÉTODOS: Este estudo transversal incluiu 760 estudantes (319 meninos e 441 meninas) que relataram dor lombar. Foram coletados dados demográficos, socioeconómicos, dispositivos eletrônicos, nível de atividade física, saúde mental e a alta frequência e alta intensidade da dor lombar. Foram utilizadas análises descritivas e regressões logísticas bivariadas e multivariadas. RESULTADOS: Do total de indivíduos com dor lombar, 14,6% relataram alta frequência de dor, sendo 36,9% meninos e 63,1% meninas, enquanto que, 42,6% relataram alta intensidade, sendo 35,8% meninos e 47,2% meninas. As variáveis associadas com a alta frequência de dor lombar foram o problema de saúde mental, uso de tablete na postura deitada, tempo diário no uso do telefone celular e distância da tela do computador aos olhos do usuário, enquanto o sexo feminino, problema de saúde mental, uso do celular na postura deitada e distância da tela do computador aos olhos do usuário com a alta intensidade de dor lombar. CONCLUSÃO: Os fatores demográficos e relacionados ao uso de dispositivos eletrônicos foram associados a alta intensidade e alta frequência de dor lombar.

INTRODUCTION: Primary headaches, defined as disorders in themselves caused by independent pathomechanisms and not by other disorders, are prevalent in university students and considered one important health problems in the world. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of primary headaches and analyze associations with sociodemographic characteristics and the use of electronic devices by university students. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study analysis was carried out with a sample of 1,143 students of both genders who responded to the questionnaire on demographic, socioeconomic aspects, use of electronic devices, and on the primary headaches. Descriptive analysis, bivariate analysis, and Poisson regression were performed. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of primary headache of 60.7%, being that, in relation to the type, 33.2% presented tension-type headache, 54.3% migraine, and 12.3% other types of headache. Regression analysis showed that female gender and income of up to two minimum wages were associated with primary headache and migraine type. The primary headache was associated with subjects of the white race; watching television and playing video games for more than 3 hours per day, for example. The sitting posture, semi-lying down, and distance from the eyes to the mobile phone and tablet longer than 20 cm were associated with primary headache and the three types of headaches. CONCLUSION: The results allow us to conclude that there is a high prevalence of primary headaches in college students and that socioeconomic factors related to the use of electronic devices are associated with the presence of primary headaches.


INTRODUÇÃO: As dores de cabeça primárias, definidas como perturbações em si mesmas, causadas por patomecanismos independentes e não por outras perturbações, são prevalentes em universitários e considerada um importante problema de saúde mundial. OBJETIVO: Investigar a prevalência de cefaleia primária e analisar associações com características sociodemográficas e uso de dispositivos eletrônicos em estudantes universitários. MÉTODOS: Foi realizado um estudo observacional transversal com uma amostra de 1143 estudantes de ambos os sexos, que responderam ao questionário sobre aspectos demográficos, socioeconômicos, uso de dispositivos eletrônicos e cefaleia primária. Foram realizadas análises descritivas, análises bivariadas e regressão de Poisson. RESULTADOS: A prevalência geral de cefaleia primária de 60,7%, sendo que, em relação ao tipo, 33,2% apresentavam cefaleia tensional, 54,3% enxaqueca e 12,3% outros tipos de cefaleia. A análise de regressão mostrou que o sexo feminino e a renda de até dois salários-mínimos estavam associados à cefaleia primária e a enxaqueca; a cefaleia primária está associada a indivíduos da raça branca; assistir televisão e jogar videogame por mais de 3 horas por dia foi associado ao tipo tensional, a enxaqueca e cefaleia primária; a postura sentada, semideitada e distância dos olhos ao telefone celular e tablet com mais de 20 cm com a cefaleia primária e aos três tipos específicos. CONCLUSÃO: Os resultados permitem concluir que existe alta prevalência de cefaleia primária em estudantes universitários e que fatores socioeconômicos e relacionados ao uso de dispositivos eletrônicos estão associados à presença de cefaleia primária.

Abstract Objectives: To determine the prevalence of low back pain and to analyze the association with the individual, sociodemographic variables, electronic devices, habitual practice of physical activity, and mental health problems. Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1,628 students in public schools in the city of Bauru, SP, Brazil. The following data were collected: 1. demographic and socioeconomic aspects; 2. Use of electronic devices; 3. habitual physical activity level (Baecke); 3. mental health (SDQ). 4. low back pain (Nordic Questionnaire). Descriptive analyzes and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were used. Results: The overall prevalence of low back pain was 46.7% (95% CI: 44.27 to 49.11); men showed a prevalence of 42.0% (95% CI: 36.63 to 43.41) and women 58.0% (95% CI: 49.73 to 56.51), a statistically significant difference. The variables associated with pain in the low back region were: female gender (PR = 1.70), daily TV use for more than 3 hours (PR = 1.17), use of laptop computer (PR = 1.40), use of the cell phone in the supine position (PR = 1.23), use of the cell phone in semi-supine position (PR = 1.49), daily cell phone use for more than 3 hours (PR = 1.36), use of tablet (PR = 1.67), daily tablet use for more than above 3 hours (PR = 1.46), and clinically important mental health problems (PR = 2.62). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of low back pain in high school students and striking association with female sex, electronic devices, and mental health problems.


Resumo Objetivos: Determinar a prevalência de lombalgia e analisar a associação com variáveis individuais e sociodemográficas, dispositivos eletrônicos, prática habitual de atividade física e problemas de saúde mental. Métodos: Estudo transversal com 1.628 alunos matriculados em escolas públicas na cidade de Bauru/SP. Para a coleta de dados: 1. aspectos demográficos e socioeconômicos; 2. dispositivos eletrônicos; 3. nível habitual de atividade física (Baecke); 3. saúde mental (SDQ); 4. Lombalgia (Questionário Nórdico). Foram usadas análises descritivas e de regressão logística bivariada e multivariada. Resultados: A prevalência geral de lombalgia foi 46,7% (IC de 95%: 44,27 a 49,11), os homens mostraram uma prevalência de 42,0% (IC de 95%: 36,63 a 43,41) e as mulheres mostraram uma prevalência de 58,0% (IC de 95%: 49,73 a 56,51), com diferença significativa. As variáveis associadas a dor na região lombar inferior foram: sexo feminino (RP = 1,70), tempo de uso de TV acima de 3 horas por dia (RP = 1,17), uso de notebook (RP = 1,40), uso de celular na posição supina (RP = 1,23), uso de celular na posição semissupina (RP = 1,49), tempo de uso de celular acima de 3 horas por dia (RP = 1,36), uso de tablet (RP = 1,67), tempo de uso de tablet acima de 3 horas por dia (RP = 1,46) e problemas de saúde mental clinicamente importantes (RP = 2,62). Conclusão: Há alta prevalência de lombalgia em alunos do ensino médio e forte associação ao sexo feminino, dispositivos eletrônicos e problemas de saúde mental.
